Quantitative Fit Testing

Prior to conducting fit testing for respiratory protective equipment (RPE), here’s a comprehensive checklist to ensure everything is in order:

1. Specify RPE Details: 

   - Identify the brand and model of the RPE (e.g., Sundstrom SR100 or 3M 6200).

2. Understand RPE Usage:

   - Know the purpose of the RPE: Is it for particulate protection (e.g., silica, asbestos) or for gas/vapour protection?

   - Familiarize yourself with how to select, use, and maintain the RPE based on its intended use.

3. Proper Donning of RPE:

   - Understand the correct procedure for putting on the face piece.

4. Facial Hair Policy:

   - Ensure all individuals being tested are CLEAN-SHAVEN around the sealing surface of the respirator. Stubble, goatees, or any facial hair that interferes with the seal will disqualify them from testing. While razors and shaving cream are available on-site, it is more efficient for workers to come prepared. Refer to the guide on acceptable facial hair if needed.

5. PPE Compatibility:

   - Bring any additional PPE (e.g., hard hats, glasses) that will be worn with the RPE to ensure compatibility during the test.

6. Pre-Test Conditions:

   - Avoid smoking 30 minutes prior to the test.

   - Do not eat within 30 minutes before the test.

7. Medical Fitness:

   - Ensure all workers are medically fit to wear a respirator. If there is any uncertainty, have the employee assessed by a medical practitioner or occupational health physician before the test.

8. RPE Condition and Adaptors:

   - If using your own respirator, ensure it is clean and in good condition. Provide the brand and model beforehand so that we can ensure an appropriate adaptor is available. Without the necessary adaptor, testing cannot be performed.
